Collagen Induction Therapy AKA ‘Skin Needling’

Collagen Induction Therapy, also know as skin needling is a procedure which involves the stimulation of the skin to produce collagen and elastin. This leads to tightening and smoothing of the skin. Skin Inspiration use both “Dermastamp” and “Rejuvapen”.

Collagen Induction Therapy or skin needling can be used to:

  • smooth facial lines including perioral (mouth) lines
  • improve skin texture and clarity
  • relaxe and smooth scarring
  • fill old surgical scars
  • improve the appearance of stretch marks

Skin needling is a procedure performed by either a qualified skin therapist or a doctor using a roller system with small acupuncture like needles puncturing the epidermis (surface) and dermis (second layer). The rollers have different penetration abilities depending on the length of their needles. The dermal treatment leads to the stimulation of collagen and elastin which in turn leads to tightening and softening of the skin wrinkles. At Skin Inspiration we are able to use medical length needle rollers as well as those used in beauty salons, and therefore we are able to choose the most appropriate treatment for the condition presented.

Gradual, noticeable results

The remodeling of the new collagen and elastin continues for a few months after each treatment. Skin needling also perforates and softens fibrous scars enabling the deposition of new collagen. The new collagen fills depressed scars from the bottom up, lifting scars so they are level with the surrounding skin. This process can be enhanced with active ingredient such as Vitamins A and C, growth factors, peptides and lightening ingredients.

Because the surface of the skin is left intact the healing period is very rapid. The skin will appear slightly sunburned immediately after the treatment, and the next day work can be resumed as normal perhaps with the assistance of mineral makeup. Multiple treatments are usually necessary to achieve significant improvements with lines and scars. Treatment effects are cumulative and are usually seen within 4-6 weeks of each treatment, and this may be repeated every 6-8 weeks.

Conditions that should not be treated include severe active acne, infection, eczema, severe sun damage, skin cancer, warts, raised moles, rosacea and psoriasis.

Two levels of Needling

There are two basic levels of skin needling, one is for home usage and the other is a medical grade treatment which requires topical anaesthetic and will take approximately 20-30 minutes.

At this point in time there is only one skin needling procedure that is listed by the TGA (Therapeutic Good Act), Dermaroller. This device is made in Germany and its efficacy is proven by scientific and clinical studies to assist with skin and scar tissue regeneration. There are other copies but the needles are usually of an inferior quality and do not provide the same superior results.

Skin needling or Collagen Induction Therapy is a simple, safe and effective procedure with minimal recovery time, significant lasting results and has many advantages over laser and skin peels and may be used on any skin colour without negative side effects.
